Writing about yourself isn’t easy. In fact, it’s an overwhelming task for most teenagers. My name is Carson Buck, and I’m passionate about helping students find their voice. My mission is to use my skills as a writer and editor to aid college bound students in crafting memorable essays for their college applications.
Working together, we will break down the essay process into small assignments. Idea generation, free form writing, and multiple drafts are all elements we'll work through together. As well, we will build a timeline, setting deadlines for each assignment, taking into account students' academic, athletic, and work lives.
I've worked as a writer and editor my entire career, first at Penguin Books, then as a marketing and communications professional across multiple industries. I have an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of San Francisco and undergraduate degrees in History and Creative Writing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
As an experienced editor, writer, and essay counselor with expertise in the college admissions process, I tap into students' creativity to highlight the writer inside each of them. My process teaches students how to write well-crafted essays that succeed in capturing the eye of admissions officers, as well as teaching students writing skills vital to success once they begin their college careers.
Although we had been preparing for the college application process for years, one of the best decisions we made was to hire Carson Buck to guide our son with his personal statement and supplemental essays for the ten schools on his list. Carson's discovery process to help applicants identify and write about their unique qualities was highly effective. Thanks to her support, our son was admitted to a top, competitive school and his first choice.

I really enjoyed working with Mrs. Buck during the college admissions process. Summer of my junior year, I was overwhelmed by the idea of writing a series of essays and filling out my college applications. As I learned, the application process, and more specifically the essay portions, require a considerable amount of time and effort. Having someone like Mrs Buck who is patient, very creative, and knowledgeable about what colleges look for in the application process, alleviated a large portion of the stress. Furthermore, in the brainstorming phase, when I was developing ideas for open-ended essay prompts, Mrs. Buck’s approachable persona and her specific brainstorming exercises allowed me to feel comfortable discussing ideas for essay topics. Another important part of the admissions process is time management. Mrs. Buck helped me stay on a schedule to complete my essays by the deadlines.
